What I Learned From School Magazine Exercise

From creating the front cover and contents page for my school magazine, i have learnt a few things that will help me when creating my final product for my media project.

It is very important to have a good quality image on the front cover because this is the main focus of the magazine, one thing i think i will do differently is instead of having an image of a building, i will have the image of a person, who will be the person that will feature in my main article.

I also found that the text was not very clear against the background, so that is something that will need to be improved.

I think that the best thing about my school magazine is the colour scheme, it goes with the school logo and it is also the school colours, this is the type of thing that i would like to do on my final magazine because it is important to match the colour pallet to the type of magazine that i am trying to produce.

I also learnt that the contents page is just as important as the front cover of the magazine, because this includes all of the information that will guide the reader through the magazine and also give them the slightest bit of information, so they do not only know what to expect from the magazine but they are also left wanting to read on.

Good/ Bad Photos

For my first media studies project I had to design a front cover and contents page for a school magazine I was going to create. It was important that all of the images used were original, so in order to achieve this I had to go around the school taking a range of photos that I could use. Altogether I took about one hundred photos, I then had to sort them into three categories, which were, good, bad and average. In order to do this I needed to know what it is that makes a good photo, and these are:

• The photo must not be blured and must be clear and sharp.

• Try and get the main feature of the image central when taking the photo.

• Make sure the lighting is good when taking the image, because if its to bright it will distort and if its to dark it will be difficult to see.
 
• The image should fit in with the colour pallet being used on the front cover and contents page other wise it will look out of place.

This is the contents page for my school magazine, i have kept the same house style in terms of the background colour and the same kind of font. However on the contents page i decided to use some different types of font, and looking back i would have proffered to have kept all of the font the same, so that the magazine would have had a more familiar feel to it, I only used one image on the contents page, but i feel it should have had more than one because it looks quite boring and bland, i also don't feel that i utilised the space very well as there is a lot of empty space that could have been filled with imagery. I have used bold sub headings and page numbers to make it as clear as i can for the reader.

This is the finished front cover of my school magazine called The Weekly Granger, that i completed as part of a media project, i also created a contents page. On the front cover i have used all the same font, with the same effects on all of the lettering, and these were drop shadow, bevel and emboss and stroke, i used these in order to make the words stand out better on the page. For the background i used yellow and blue fading into each other because these are the school colours as shown on the logo, this means that the magazine sticks with the basic conventions of the school, to make it easily recognisable. I also used various pictures on the front cover and these were out of a selection of photos that i took, i then chose the best four of the ones taken to put onto my front cover. When choosing the photos i thought it was very important for the main image to be a picture of the front of the school, so everybody would know that this is the school magazine for Heworth Grange.
